Conflict of Interest

All faculty members, Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators are required to file a Conflict of Interest/Commitment (COI/COC) declaration within 30 days of joining UBC and at least annually thereafter, or whenever there is a significant change to your appointment or circumstances. The COI/COC declaration discloses the nature of, and time spent on, any competing activities outside UBC.

A current COI/COC declaration is required by Federal Tri-Council agencies (NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC) and is one of many ways in which UBC maintains its high ethical standards. UBC was the first university in Canada to require all faculty members and active researchers to maintain an up-to-date and approved Conflict of Interest/Commitment declaration.

To file your COI/COC declaration, login to RISe and answer the ten yes/no questions about any potentially competing activities outside UBC.

Citation Management

Managing citations is an essential part of the research process. Citation management tools can help you to:

  • organize your research all in one place;
  • avoid plagiarism by tracking your research path;
  • create in text citations with the click of a button; and
  • easily format and re-format bibliographies and in-text references, facilitating the change of formats for submission to different journals.

UBC Library maintains a site licence for RefWorks, which is available for free to UBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Instructions for best use of RefWorks can be found here.
